Closing Tabs in Firefox 2

If you want to change the location of the close buttons for tabs in Firefox, type

about:config
in the location bar, then change to a number from 0 to 3 as follows:
  1. Display a close button on the active tab only
  2. Display close buttons on all tabs (Default)
  3. Don’t display any close buttons
  4. Display a single close button at the end of the tab strip (Firefox 1.x behavior)

At first I found the new tabs odd but now when I find myself sitting at a 1.x version machine I get angry at the old tab behaviour slowing me down

For me it depends on how I am working. Ideally, a combination option would also be available.

Often I use the very handy "Open All in Tabs" to open and work with a grouping of bookmarks for a specific project or purpose. I will want to keep this base "parent" grouping open, and selectively open some of the "child" links to the right. Usually, the number of child links will vary by parent, but I'll view the children of each parent together.

When dismissing a family of children at once, it's easier to have the X in one spot -- the single close button.

Sure, I will want to dismiss a parent too from the middle of the group, but in that case, I can always Right-Click and press C to close.

The advantages of working this way are that: you know you are viewing things in a comprehensive manner (much preferable over a lot of forward/back motion), and it allows for much quicker comparisons between the child links.
